Acupressure therapy: what it is, what it isn't, and who it is for

People often arrive at acupressure therapy having tried other things. Massage that gave temporary relief but did not reach what was underneath. Physiotherapy that addressed the structure but not the stress holding the structure in place. A sense that something in the body is asking for attention but that what is on offer does not quite meet it.

Acupressure therapy works differently, not because it is better than other modalities, but because it is asking a different question. Not what is wrong with the body, but what is the body trying to say.

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Japanese healing art of Shiatsu, acupressure works with the body's meridian system, the energy pathways through which vital force, or Qi, moves. When that movement is disrupted, through chronic stress, physical tension, emotional weight, or the accumulated demands of a life lived largely in the head rather than the body, the practitioner's role is to listen to where the disruption is and support the conditions under which the body can begin to restore its own balance.

A session looks different from what most people expect. You remain fully clothed. There are no oils. The work happens on a mat or low table, using pressure from the fingers, palms or elbows along specific points and pathways, combined with gentle stretches and moments of stillness. It is not always comfortable in the way a relaxing massage is comfortable, it reaches deeper than that. But it is often profoundly releasing in ways that are difficult to anticipate in advance.

What acupressure therapy can support is broad, chronic muscular tension, stress and nervous system dysregulation, digestive difficulty, hormonal imbalance, headaches, poor sleep, the kind of emotional heaviness that has nowhere to go. During pregnancy, it is particularly valuable for the physical discomforts of a changing body and for supporting the nervous system as it navigates an enormous transition. In the postpartum period, it offers something rarer, a space where the woman's own experience is the focus, where she is the one being tended, where the body's process of recovery and integration can happen with someone present who is paying full attention to it.

You do not need to be in pain or unwell to benefit from this kind of work. What you need is a willingness to slow down, to come back into the body, and to allow something to be attended to that has been waiting.

If you are curious about whether acupressure therapy is right for you, or about how it integrates with doula support across pregnancy and postpartum, you can find out more here.
